OPEN RANK FACULTY POSITIONS AT THE GRADUATE SCHOOL OF PUBLIC POLICY

Qualifications

  • PhD in Public Policy, Public Administration, Economics, Political Science or a related discipline with a public policy focus
  • Relevant academic teaching and research experience: Full Professor – at least 2 years at full professor or 5 years at associate professor level, Associate Professor – at least 2 years at associate professor or 5 years at assistant professor level
  • International research profile – Publications in reputable international peer reviewed journals on policy-relevant topics; success in attracting competitive funding; awards and prizes from relevant professional/academic associations Applications are particularly invited from candidates with an established record of research and teaching in the following areas:

NAZARBAYEV UNIVERSITY POSTDOCTORAL SCHOLAR

Nazarbayev University (NU) is located in Astana, Kazakhstan. It is a young international, English-medium institution created with the support of leading global university partners. In support of our growing research mission, Nazarbayev University is recruiting several full-time University Postdoctoral Scholars with research aligned to the following areas in the Graduate School of Public Policy:

  • Public Governance Innovation
  • Sustainable Economic Development
  • New Technology and Public Policy
  • Urban and Transport Policy
  • Health and Social Policy

The NU Postdoctoral Scholars program develops future faculty by providing research and teaching opportunities. Successful candidates are eligible to apply for internal research grants and are supported by the mentorship of a senior faculty mentor. The University Postdoctoral Scholars also teach two courses per year in an area relevant to their research discipline and the needs of the School.

NU Postdoctoral Scholars are encouraged to develop international research networks and may apply for Assistant Professor positions at Nazarbayev University and elsewhere. However, please note that all faculty appointments at NU are based on merit, including international research benchmarks, and there is no automatic progression from Postdoctoral Scholar to Assistant Professor.

University Postdoctoral Scholars receive an attractive, internationally competitive remuneration package and are appointed on a 2-year renewable contract with a possibility of renewal for an additional two years (maximum of 4 years in total) subject to yearly performance reviews.

Job Description - Duties and Responsibilities

University Postdoctoral Scholars:

  • conduct research and teach two courses/year as directed by the Department or School, either in their area of specialization or in a subject required by their program of affiliation;
  • undertake a workload based on 80% research and 20% teaching; the 80% research load includes research administration and management duties;
  • disseminate the results of their research;
  • actively collaborate in the research and scholarly activities of relevant research groups; and
  • participate in the support of research students.

Qualifications and Selection Criteria

Applications will be assessed based on the following essential qualifications and selection criteria:

  • a Ph.D. degree from a recognized university;
  • publications in reputable journals and conferences in related areas of expertise;
  • excellent verbal and written communication skills in English;
  • demonstrated understanding of the operational requirements for a successful research project and management of resources;
  • knowledge and application of the principles underpinning successful grant applications;
  • proven ability to identify and fulfill the academic writing requirements for target publications;
  • proven record of working with team members as well as undergraduate and postgraduate students to help build research skills and guide professional development; and
  • academic experience consistent with the NU’s mission as an international research-intensive university.

Salary and benefits: An internationally competitive salary is offered. On-campus accommodation is provided for a modest fee. Health care insurance is available.
