SDSN Kazakhstan
UN SDSN

The UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) works under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General to mobilize the world’s universities, think tanks, and national laboratories for action on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Agreement.

Spanning six continents, the SDSN network comprises over 1,800 member institutions, most of which are universities, coordinated by 53 National and Regional Networks. The purpose of a National or Regional SDSN is to mobilize universities, research centers, civil society organizations, business, and other knowledge centers around practical problem solving for sustainable development. The SDSN offices are located in New York, Paris, and Kuala Lumpur.

SDSN works towards supporting sustainable development in three main areas:
1. Localizing and mobilizing support for the SDGs, including supporting governments in understanding and addressing the challenges of sustainable development;
2. Promoting high-quality education and research collaboration for sustainable development;
3. Vetting and launching solution initiatives, including supporting the preparation of long-term pathways.
SDSN Kazakhstan

Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Kazakhstan, hosted by Nazarbayev University is a national network under SDSN established on June 8, 2022, and currently comprising of 24 member institutions. The network focuses on conducting research that will support the development of sustainable pathways in Kazakhstan.

Apart from research, our activities include teaching, raising public awareness, developing policy recommendations, and research collaborations to support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UNSDGs). We are an integral part of Nazarbayev University’s Graduate School of Public Policy (NU GSPP).

Our Mission and Priority Areas

The mission of SDSN Kazakhstan is to:
1) Promote practical solutions for the development of long-term sustainable pathways in Kazakhstan,
2) Support high-quality education and research collaboration on SDGs in Kazakhstan,
3) Suggest applied research and policy initiatives for better addressing the challenges of sustainable development in Kazakhstan.

Our thematic priorities of are shaped by the local context, stakeholder consultations, and prevailing challenges and opportunities in the country:
· Land, Water, and Communities (SDG 9, 12)
· Energy and Climate (SDG 7, 13)
· Education and partnership (SDG 4, 10, 17)

SDSN Kazakhstan currently comprises 24 members across Kazakhstan, consisting of 20 universities, 1 research institute, 2 NGOs, and 1 institute affiliated with international organizations.

Our Annual Conferences

Annually, SDSN Kazakhstan hosts research conferences dedicated to sustainable development topics.

The 1st SDSN Kazakhstan Conference on Sustainable Development Goals in Central Asia took place at Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Public Policy on May 30, 2023.
It was a one-day conference comprising 6 Panel Sessions including 19 conference speakers. The overall registered number of attendees for the conference panels is 356 (225 in-person, 131 online) – which indicates genuine public interest in the themes of the conference.

The 2nd SDSN Kazakhstan Conference on "Localisation of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) across sectors in Central Asia" was held at Nazarbayev University on May 13-14, 2024. The conference brought together government officials, the academic community, international organizations, and civil society to discuss the latest developments and challenges in SDG localization and implementation both at national and sub-national levels across a variety of sectors such as education, public health, energy, public administration, environmental protection agencies, non-governmental sector, and others.
