Security Challenges and Policy Response
This course focuses on security issues/challenges in their relation to governance and everyday political life in Central Asia and Kazakhstan, in particular. Participants will be able to critically analyze security threats and the ways policy makers can deal with them.

About the Programme
The program focuses on security challenges, exploring a range of threats including human, cyber, food, and health security, as well as terrorism in the Central Asian region and particularly in Kazakhstan. Participants will gain the ability to critically analyze security threats and understand the various approaches policymakers can adopt to address these issues.

The course provides practical tools and methodologies for assessing and managing risks in a fast-evolving security environment. Participants will engage in interactive case studies and group discussions to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.

This comprehensive approach will equip them with the skills necessary to develop effective policy responses and strategies to address both traditional and non-traditional security challenges.

  • Dr. Dina Sharipova
    Associate Professor and Vice Dean for Research, NU Graduate School of Public Policy (NU GSPP)
    Dr. Dina Sharipova received her Ph.D. in Political Science from Indiana University, Bloomington, in 2013. Prior to joining NU GSPP she worked as a Research Director of the College of Social Sciences, (KIMEP University, 2016-2018) and served on the board on the Board of the European Society for Central Asian (2016-2019). Currently, Dr. Sharipova is a member of an Editorial Board for Central Asian Survey. Dr. Sharipova has taught courses on Research Design and Methodology, Advanced Qualitative Methods, Ethics in Public Policy, and other. Her research interests include nation and state-building, formal and informal institutions, identity politics, and social capital and well-being in Central Asia.
