New Research on CSTO: Public Perceptions in Armenia, Kazakhstan & Kyrgyzstan
Dr. Zhanibek Arynov and Temirlan Umirbekov have published a new article in a Taylor & Francis journal titled: “Contesting the Unknown? Public Perceptions of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) in Armenia, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan.”

Abstract: This study examines the relationship between perceived security and subjective wellbeing (SWB) in Kazakhstan from 2018 to 2021. Utilizing data from the Kazakhstan household budget survey (N = 12,000), the authors found that SWB increased during this period and is positively associated with perceptions of security. The research also investigates regional differences in SWB, particularly in areas affected by the 2022 riots.

Abstract: The article explores the dynamics of state–civil society relations in Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan following changes in political leadership. It highlights that while Kyrgyzstan has become more repressive towards civil society, Kazakhstan presents a more nuanced picture, with an outwardly softened stance but underlying challenges. The study draws on data from various stakeholders, including civil society representatives and international donors.
