NU GSPP Seminar with Bermond Scoggins “When are Democracies at Risk of Democratic Decline? A Meta-Analysis of the Experimental Literature and a Conceptual Replication”

On October 13, 2022, NU GSPP will host the Seminar with Bermond Scoggins a fourth-year PhD Candidate in political science, on the topic of  “When are Democracies at Risk of Democratic Decline? A Meta-Analysis of the Experimental Literature and a Conceptual Replication”.

SYNOPSIS

Are democracies, including long-standing ones like the United States, at risk of democratic decline because voters cannot always be relied upon to protect liberal institutions and democratic procedures? Despite the pessimism of many policymakers and academics, my reanalysis of the existing experimental literature encouragingly shows that voters in long-standing democracies are reliable enough checks on undemocratic behaviour to make democratic decline highly unlikely. The risk of decline is highest in the most intuitive setting – new democracies. Using a replication from the Philippines, deployed just prior to the 2022 presidential election, I illustrate when experimental results strongly suggest voter inability to check executive efforts to concentrate power.

ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Bermond Scoggins is a fourth-year PhD Candidate in political science at the Australian National University. His research focuses on understanding voter attitudes to undemocratic behaviour in long-standing and new democracies.
