ABOUT THE SPEAKER

Dr. Ahsan is an Assistant Professor of Ankara University, has over 9 years of professional experience in teaching and research in the fields of urban planning and development, sustainable real estate/housing, climate change, migration, and disasters at a number of universities in Bangladesh, Brunei, and Turkey. Prior to joining the Ankara University as an “Assistant Professor”, Dr. Ahsan was held as an “Advisor” position of the Statistical, Economic and Social Research and Training Centre for Islamic Countries (SESRIC), a “Senior Research Officer” at Bangladesh Center for Advanced Studies (BCAS) in its various Climate change and Environment Projects. 

Dr. Md Moynul Ahsan has graduated with a Bachelor of Urban and Rural Planning from Khulna University, Bangladesh, and Master of Public Policy from University Brunei Darussalam, Brunei, and he did his Ph.D. in Urban and Environmental Sciences from the Faculty of Political Sciences at Ankara University, Ankara, Turkey.

ABOUT THE WEBINAR

The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed the world to a new global order for city planning and governance. It is clear that pandemic significantly impacted city life, and still some cities are facing an unprecedented trial. Unlike other cities in the world, some Asian cities have moved toward new innovative and resilient approaches including governance innovations that turn to new agendas, new value sets ranging from surveillance, safety nets, care, and mutuality. Asian cities is somewhat different from other regional cities in the world due to its nature, density, rapid growth and development, culture, trends of development, and methods of preparing and combating pandemics.

This study highlights existing city planning and governance practices of 5 major Asian cities such as Ankara, Beijing, Dhaka, Singapore and Tokyo. This study evaluates city planning of these five cities and determines the gap between being a post-pandemic adaptive and resilient city and meeting future challenges induced by the pandemic, aiming to forecast the future direction of city planning and governance. Good governance becomes a significant matter for these Asian cities as they need to overcome such new challenges as well as new policy agendas in city governance. This study highlights how city authorities provide governance priorities in order to ensure more inclusive, resilient planning and governance focusing on public health and wellbeing infrastructure, nature based solutions, etc. Successful city governance more specifically build back better effort, polycentric mega-city regions, digital governance, green city action plans etc. can make the future cities more resilient and safer for all.
