Strengthening research collaboration between SDSN Kazakhstan and SDG Nexus Network project in Germany

SDSN Kazakhstan co-Chair Dr. Serik Orazgaliyev recently completed a research visit to SDG Nexus Network, which is based at the Centre for International Development and Environmental Research (ZEU) at Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany. The visit, which took place over the summer period was a significant step in enhancing collaboration between the SDG Nexus Network at JLU and SDSN Kazakhstan, underscoring the importance of global partnerships in addressing sustainable development goals (SDGs).

This visit was conducted in the context of the memorandum of understanding (MoU) signed between Nazarbayev University (NU) and Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU) in January 2024. The MoU emphasized mutual cooperation, particularly in faculty exchanges and research collaboration.

During his stay, Dr. Orazgaliyev engaged in a variety of research activities:

  • Presentation at SDG Nexus Network Seminar: On June 26th, Dr. Orazgaliyev presented at the SDG Nexus Network Research seminar, where he discussed SDSN and ongoing research projects. This presentation provided valuable insights into the research landscape of Kazakhstan and highlighted the role of SDSN in promoting sustainable development.
  • Research Proposal Submission: On June 30th, the SDG Nexus Network submitted a research proposal for DAAD funding for the period of 2025-2028, identifying SDSN Kazakhstan as a core partner. This project, if successful, will secure funding for research staff over the next three years, significantly boosting research capabilities and collaboration.
  • Media Engagement: On July 4th, Dr. Orazgaliyev gave an interview to the Bulan Institute for Peace Innovations (Geneva), where he discussed critical issues such as climate change, energy transition, and SDSN’s projects. This media engagement helped in disseminating knowledge and raising awareness about ongoing research efforts.

The research visit was characterized by a fruitful exchange of experience and ideas. The discussions held with colleagues at JLU explored potential avenues for future collaboration, laying the foundation for long-term research partnerships. As a result of this successful visit, plans are underway for continued collaboration between SDSN and the Centre for International Development and Environmental Research. The collaborative efforts initiated during this visit are expected to lead to meaningful research outcomes that will contribute to global sustainable development goals. The partnerships formed and the projects proposed during this visit represent a significant step forward in the internationalization of research and the strengthening of ties between NU and JLU.
