New Research on Security and Wellbeing in Kazakhstan
Exciting Research Alert!
NU GSPP Associate Professor Dr. Sharipova and co-author Alma Kudebayeva have published a new article in the journal Post-Communist Economies titled: "Happiness in the Steppe: Exploring the Connection Between Security and Wellbeing in Kazakhstan."
Abstract:
This study explores the relationship between perceived security and subjective wellbeing (SWB) in Kazakhstan. The authors analyze:
How wellbeing changed in Kazakhstan from 2018 to 2021
The impact of perceived security (protection from violence, fraud, assault, and theft) on SWB
Differences in SWB between regions affected by the 2022 riots and those that were not
Using data from the Kazakhstan Household Budget Survey (N = 12,000), the study finds that subjective wellbeing increased from 2018 to 2021. Additionally, a greater sense of security is positively associated with SWB. These findings offer valuable insights for policymakers to enhance wellbeing and prevent negative societal outcomes.
