NU GSPP Hosts Successful Case Study Workshop Led by Experts from Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy

The training was led by distinguished experts from the Case Study Unit (CSU) of the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy (LKYSPP) at the National University of Singapore (NUS). These experts bring extensive experience from academia, the public sector, and non-governmental organizations, ensuring a rich and diverse learning experience for all attendees.

NU Graduate School of Public Policy (NU GSPP) hosted a comprehensive Case Study Workshop from May 15-17, 2024. The workshop aimed to equip participants with the essential knowledge and skills required to develop and effectively use case studies in social studies teaching. Through learning the intricacies of case writing, information gathering techniques, and case teaching methodologies, participants gained valuable insights ready for application in their professional contexts.

Participants included NU GSPP faculty, 3rd and 4th year PhD students, and other faculty members from various Kazakhstani universities. The workshop featured 12 diverse sessions covering a broad range of crucial topics, such as developing a teaching plan, facilitating a case discussion, utilizing case studies in public policy education, and gathering information through documents and observation.

Ng Kok Hoe, Senior Research Fellow and Head of the Case Study Unit at LKYSPP, highlighted the significance of the workshop, stating: “This case study workshop allowed us to share our experience in developing public policy case studies and promoting their use in education. The use of real-world situations to teach students critical thinking, decision-making, and communication makes case studies a powerful and versatile pedagogical tool. This workshop gave us an opportunity to demonstrate this, and to learn from the experiences of NU GSPP colleagues. Thank you for the chance to visit! We look forward to working together again in the future.”

The successful collaboration between NU GSPP and LKYSPP’s CSU team marks a significant step towards enhancing public policy education in Kazakhstan. The skills and knowledge imparted during the workshop will undoubtedly contribute to the development of more effective and engaging educational methodologies in the region.
