Nazarbayev University Graduate School of Public Policy (GSPP) is launching its Public Debate Series in April 2018.
The Debates are designed to pursue the following main objectives. First, it will be a forum to discuss important policy issues and reforms. Secondly, it is planned to become an annual event, designed to promote the school and raise awareness about what we study and research at GSPP. Finally, public speaking skills are essential for future policy-makers and leaders. By participating in debates, GSPP students will develop their public speaking skills as well as ability to formulate arguments and critically evaluate policies.
RESOLUTION: THIS GOVERNMENT BELIEVES THAT GOOD GOVERNANCE DOES NOT MATTER FOR DEVELOPMENT
The debate will focus on the role of good governance and quality of institutions as prerequisite factors for development. The mainstream view is that development is not possible without inclusive political and economic institutions in place. However, critics of this view argue that there are other important factors that should be taken into consideration. Such factors include trade, productive capacity, geography, and availability of natural resources to name just a few. Therefore, the analysis of the discourse on this topic will be intellectually stimulating for anyone with an interest in governance, economics, development policies and policy-making.
